More about H1N1 vaccine

Over the past weekend and today in clinic I have had multiple people ask me questions about the H1N1 vaccine.  I answered their questions and then referred them to our blog to stay updated on the new information we receive.  Dr. Linsmeier has already done an amazing blog on the first information we know about this vaccine.  Please make sure to read this as it will inform you of many of the questions you have.

One of the questions I heard over and over this weekend is how do we know that it is safe.  Right now the CDC, federal government and other agencies are in the process of testing the vaccine.  While they are fast tracking this they are not going to put out a vaccine that will cause severe consequences. One problem is that there are some problems that are not noticed until we have mass immunization.  These are the one in a million type problems.  One thing that is very important to remember is that they are basing this vaccine on the flu vaccine that we use every year.  While the strain is different, the actual vaccine process is not varying from other years.  I think the confusion has come in because there is another vaccine that they are considering.  This is one that has something in it called adjuvants- or immune boosting ingredients.  This is something that is approved to be used in Europe but not in the US.  This is not the vaccine we are talking about at the moment.  They are testing this but this will take longer to approve since it is different then the annual flu vaccine.

When the vaccine comes out , if testing is complete and shows no problem, I will be giving it to all three of my children.  As a parent you want to make the best choice for your child and in these circumstances without all of the information it can be difficult.  Please continue to watch our website and our blog for the latest information.  This is a work in progress and we will provide updated information as it comes out.  For now, enjoy the summer and stay healthy.

Hey, this is a great way to keep us informed about what Bayshore Pediatrics will be doing with both the seasonal flu and H1N1 vacinations. I’ll be checking for updates.

    Thanks.
