Ah, Summer- If only there were no Bugs!

Yeah, the heat is finally on in Milwaukee! Unfortunately, that also means the bugs are out. I just returned from a vacation in Michigan where you couldn’t walk out the door at dusk or dawn without being swarmed by mosquitoes. My kids spent the weekend at the cabin (with the grandparents) and their faces were covered in bites. So, what can you do? Well, common sense things like long sleeve pants and shirts if you are going to be outside at those heavy bug times. Avoid areas with standing water like ponds and pails of water. Insect repellent is highly recommended, not only are those bugs a nuisance, they also can carry diseases like West Nile Virus or get secondarily infected. I lost my 3 year old at Disney- how my preemptive talk helped me find him

Imagine this- New Year’s Eve at Walt Disneyland, park filled to capacity with over 85,000 people (most of them blowing kazoos), a six week old baby, and losing your 3 year old child. I was not gone more than 3 minutes, but knew as soon as I got back to my mom that he was lost. More »

They estimated that 40-50% of the population would be infected, with an estimate of 30 to 90,000 deaths from that. The CDC retracted those numbers, stating they felt the estimates were too high; however, the above reports have caused a flood of questions to come into our office about when to vaccinate and what can be done about the H1N1 virus. Ways to keep the bugs away!

Bugs are a major drawback to finally enjoying the nice summer weather (which I am sure will come back soon!). One of our readers posed a question about bug sprays after reading Dr. Paley’s blog on insect bites. Insect bites can also lead to potentially serious infections such as West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Many parents are concerned about the chemicals in insect sprays, especially DEET. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that insect repellents with DEET are safe for all children two months of age and older. More »

Spring is sprung- and so are my allergies!!

Ah, Spring! Trees budding, grass growing, flowers blooming- and my eyes itching, nose running, and sneezing. Although I love spring because it means winter is FINALLY over, I really dislike what happens with my allergies. Many of our patients had similar complaints, More »
