West Nile Virus
I’m sure many of you saw in the news that West Nile Virus was found in some mosquitoes tested in 3 different mosquito pools in the Milwaukee area. I know what you are thinking, “We don’t live in Egypt” (This isn’t Egypt is it?). It turns out the name has nothing to do with where you can get the illness. More »

Tylenol, Motrin, and Benadryl recall
Mcneil Consumer and Specialty Pharmaceuticals has announced another voluntary recall of some over-the-counter children’s medications, which include Tylenol products, Motrin products, and Benadryl.
This action is a follow-up to a product recall that McNeil Consumer Healthcare originally announced on January 15, 2010, which was initiated following consumer complaints of a musty or moldy odor, which has been linked to the presence of trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA). The risk of serious adverse medical events is remote. This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Please check your cabinets at home and verify that the lot numbers you have at home have not been recalled. See the link below to check lot numbers and to find instructions on what to do if you have these recalled lots.

New recall of over-the-counter medications -Tylenol, Motrin, and others
On April 30, 2010, Mcneil Consumer and Specialty Pharmaceuticals announced a voluntary recall of some over-the-counter children’s medications, which include Tylenol products, Motrin products, Zyrtec, and Benadryl.
The reason for the recall is not due to adverse reactions but rather due to the products not meeting the required standards. What this means is that some of the products may contain a higher concentration of active ingredient than is specified; others may contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements; and others may contain tiny particles. The amount of ingredients in the recalled lots does not be the requirements and is therefore suspect. As a precaution, the company is advising that the products recalls not be given or used.
Please check your cabinets at home and verify that the lot numbers you have at home have not been recalled. See the link below to check lot numbers and to find instructions on what to do if you have these recalled lots.

Rotarix vaccine in the news
The rotavirus vaccine brand name Rotarix has recently been in the news. As of Monday, March 22nd, the FDA and CDC suspended the sale and use of Rotarix, a vaccine manufactured by Glaxo-Smith Kline. The FDA has learned that DNA from porcine circovirus type 1 (PCV1) is present in Rotarix. There is no evidence at this time that this finding poses a safety risk. While the agency is learning more about the situation, FDA is recommending that clinicians and public health professionals in the United States temporarily suspend the use of Rotarix.
Bayshore Pediatrics does not use Rotarix as the rotavirus vaccine given. Bayshore Pediatrics uses Rotateq manufactured by Merck. The majority of children in the United States vaccinated against rotavirus received RotaTeq. RotaTeq is made using different materials from Rotarix. FDA has no evidence that DNA from PCV1 is present in RotaTeq.
To find out more information, the FDA is providing updates as the investigation progresses. Go to FDA Rotarix Updates for more information.
