More about H1N1 vaccine

Over the past weekend and today in clinic I have had multiple people ask me questions about the H1N1 vaccine.  I answered their questions and then referred them to our blog to stay updated on the new information we receive.  Dr. Linsmeier has already done an amazing blog on the first information we know about this vaccine.  Please make sure to read this as it will inform you of many of the questions you have.

One of the questions I heard over and over this weekend is how do we know that it is safe.  Right now the CDC, federal government and other agencies are in the process of testing the vaccine.  More »

Announcing Seasonal Flu Vaccine Clinics

Once again, Bayshore Pediatrics is offering the seasonal influenza vaccine (this is not the same as the H1N1 flu vaccine) to all patients.  Bayshore Pediatrics has strongly encouraged all children 6 months and older to receive an annual influenza vaccine for the past 7 years (long before the CDC recommendations).  The seasonal flu vaccine provides protection to children during a time when illness is often on the rise.  We will begin influenza vaccination clinics starting as early as September 1st for nasal influenza vaccine and September 15th for injectable influenza vaccine.  More »

What about the H1N1 Vaccine?

Will there be a vaccine to prevent H1N1 (swine) flu?  Will it be safe? When can we come in to get it for our kids?  These are frequent questions at the office over the last few weeks. Thankfully, the volume of sick kids has significantly decreased over the last few weeks (sigh of relief!).   The experts at the CDC have told us to expect a decline in influenza this summer – I’m definitely enjoying that now!

But what about the fall?  Almost everyday, there is an article in the paper or on CNN.com about a presumed resurgence for this fall.  How can we protect our kids, and still allow them to live their lives?  (None of us are recommending hiding in the basement all winter!)  I think that the greatest hope is that a vaccine can be produced to protect us this winter.  More »

Ways to keep the bugs away!

Bugs are a major drawback to finally enjoying the nice summer weather (which I am sure will come back soon!). One of our readers posed a question about bug sprays after reading Dr. Paley’s blog on insect bites. Insect bites can also lead to potentially serious infections such as West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Many parents are concerned about the chemicals in insect sprays, especially DEET. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that insect repellents with DEET are safe for all children two months of age and older. More »

Happy Independence Day – keep it safe

4th of July is for many the highlight of the summer – especially for those in Wisconsin.  Summerfest, bar-b-que, grilling, and fireworks – what more could we ask for?   Mabye a little warmth but otherwise, what a great time!  In order to help everyone keep it safe, we would like to offer a few helpful tips when thinking about grilling and fireworks and children.

On a special note: To celebrate the 4th of July, Bayshore Pediatrics is closed July 4th.  A physician is on call for any urgent needs as usual.  Please also note that the Urgent Care in Bayshore Pediatrics is also closed for July 4th.   More »
